China solves fresh produce preservation on sailing navals
Reported by the People's Liberation Army Daily at the Gulf of Aden on May 15th, 2010, by reporter Zhang Qi and special correspondent Cao Haihua:
Say goodbye to preserved vegetables and canned food during long voyage into far oceans! Now navy troops can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables while sailing. Chinese navy’s fifth convoy that were on escort missions on the waters of Somalia told the reporters fresh fruits and vegetables on ship are preserved using Modified Atmosphere Preservation (M.A.P) technology.
During their voyage to the Gulf of Aden and Somalia, there were huge amount of personnel on board for many days. They had to sail for away from their base therefore food could only be loaded once before departure. Due to variations of fruits and vegetables in large amount, packing andpreservation was a problem that they had been struggling to solve. In general, vegetables could only be preserved for 7 days and fruits; 10 days in normal refrigeration temperature.
To solve this problem, the military Supplies and Oils Department along with the Naval Logistics Department have organized the researchers from the Naval Medical Research Institute to optimize the preservation period of fresh produce. Finally, they got in contact with Suzhou Senrui Packaging Equipment Co. Ltd., who took part in the National 863 Plan of ‘Active and Intelligent Food Packaging Technology’ . This company is also the founder of M.A.P in China. This technology is the perfect solution for the Navy. Suzhou Senrui processes fresh produce direct from the farm and supply to the Navy right after packaging using the M.A.P. technology. With simple refrigeration on board, fresh leafy vegetables can be preserved for at least 40 days and some even up to 60 days. Now the troops are able to have fresh fruits and vegetables even when sailing far out at sea!
